We took little pieces from different people and elements of my life and came up with Somebody Somewhere. I’m not a trained actor, so I could use a little help. It was a real challenge for me to find a concept that felt like a good fit since my stage life doesn’t really translate neatly into what might be considered a “narrative series.” But I really wanted to layer in a lot of thematic ideas that are actually important to me in my life. When I got the deal with HBO, we were talking about which writers would be a good fit and Carolyn suggested Paul and Hannah, who I’ve known for years.
